Second day wrap-up
By Alex Dodt
|
The second day of the weekend is all over. Here's how it went...
Atom
The little kids are always fun to watch and this division has been great. Tour OC Blades 98 are at the top of the heap heading into tomorrow's semifinals. In one semifinal, OC Blades 98 will play Anarchy 949 and in the other semifinal RBK Bulldogs matchup with Team Warrior 98.
Squirt AA
Round robin games ended today and all the playoff matchups are set for tomorrow. OC Blades 95, RBK Patriots, and OC Blades White all finished with perfect 3-0 records. Bandits finished not far behind at 2-1. Mission Arizona Stars Red finished 0-3 but had some tough games. They lost a nailbiter 4-3 to OC Blades 95 earlier this morning. Looking towards the playoffs tomorrow, OC Blades 95 looks like the team to beat in AA Elite while Bandits look like the favorites in AA Select.
Bantam A Select
The only overtime game of the day came in a playoff game in this division when RBK Bulldogs White upset the favored Mission Jr. Habs 3-2. The Bulldogs run would end in the semifinals though against Chula Vista Hawks. NorCal Extreme pulled out a close one in the semis to get into the Final against Chula Vista. The championship game was all Extreme as they took it to the Hawks, and cruised to a 7-3 win and the Bantam A Select title.
Bantam A Elite
A lot of close games in this division. Mission Arizona Stars knocked off the top seeded Devil Dogs in the semifinal by a 4-3 score. The game winner was scored in the final minute by Ryne Rezac. The championship game matched up Mission Arizona and HB Vipers. The Vipers' Austin Shannon was too much to handle in the Final. Shannon, who led the OC Blades 93 to the PeeWee AA Elite championship last weekend, carried the Vipers to a 6-4 win as he scored or assisted on almost all his teams goals. Congrats to the Vipers on winning Bantam A Elite.
Bantam AAA
This division just got started today. OC Blades 90 lost their first game of the year as Velocity beat them 7-3. After round robin, Western Capitals and Velocity remained undefeated and took the top seeds. Tomorrow's playoff matchups look like this: Tour OC Blades 90 play Tour Outcasts with the winner of that game facing Western Capitals in one semifinal. In the other semifinal, Velocity will face off with Sin City Snipers 90.
Junior
AKS dominated their way to the championship game but they faced a great challenge from the Revision Devil Dogs. The Devil Dogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead early on but AKS played their typical puck control game, stayed calm and mounted a comeback just like last year when they beat RBK Bulldogs in overtime to win Midget. This time, though, they didn't need any extra time. Goals by Fran Bertagni and Georgie Barber tied it up at 2, and then came the game winner and it was sick. Barber raced up the right side, picked up the puck behind the net, bounced it off the net around the defensemen, then passed it out to front to Loren Barron who one timed it blocker side past the Revision goalie with a little more than a minute left. Barron added an empty netter to clinch it 4-2 for AKS' 3rd Pacific Cup championship in 3 years.
That's all for today. Tomorrow Squirt A, Squirt AAA, and Bantam AA will start up and we'll have championship games in Atom, Squirt AA, and Bantam AAA.
